Honouring Innovation in Crime Prevention Shows Commitment to Preventing a Crime Before it Happens

For Immediate Release: January 19, 2010

(Toronto) – The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police is pleased to announce the establishment of a new award designed to honour a police agency and a community organization or group that have partnered an innovative crime prevention initiative or strategy to keep communities safe.

“As police leaders, we would rather prevent a crime from happening than have to deal with the consequences of that crime,” said OACP President Chief Daniel Parkinson (Cornwall Community Police Service). “This award shows our commitment to partnerships in crime prevention.”

The award is sponsored by Accident Support Services International and will be presented to a police agency and a community organization or group that has developed an innovative crime prevention initiative or strategy that prevents or reduces crime in a specific area.

“The OACP Crime Prevention Committee is working hard with corporate partners like Accident Support Services International, the Government of Ontario and community groups across the province to make our communities safer,” noted Deputy Chief Kim Derry (Toronto Police Service), Chair of the OACP Crime Prevention Committee. “By introducing this award, we want to honour the great crime prevention work being done by police services and their community partners across the province.”

Submissions for this award must be forwarded to the OACP office no later than Friday, April 9th, 2010. The award will be presented at the OACP’s Annual General Conference and Global Showcase on June 16.
