The Toronto Police Service – Psychological Services
3rd Canadian Police Psychology Forum
“Providing Psychological Support to Police Officers Serving on the Front Line”
The focus of this year's conference will be on the provision of psychological supports to police officers serving on the front lines, both at home and abroad. The conference will begin on November 4 with an opening dinner featuring a talk by Dr. Douglas Campbell, a psychologist who has provided care and crisis response on the front lines of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Sessions on November 5 will include presentations regarding the support of officer's returning from overseas deployment, both as military reservists and as seconded police mentors, with special focus on the first-hand experiences and identified needs of deployed officers. An additional session will focus on lessons learned from the experiences of officers deployed to the G8-G20 summit, both in Toronto and elsewhere.
In addition, we are extremely excited to be able to offer a half-day seminar led by Dr. Alexis Artwohl, co-author of the book “Deadly Force Encounters: What Cops Need to Know to Mentally and Physically Prepare for and Survive a Gunfight”. Dr. Artwohl's seminar will focus on the psychological effects of high-intensity incidents such as officer-involved shootings, with attention to the psychologist's role in understanding and providing effective response.
Please see our conference brochure for more information regarding this exciting 2010 event.
