Chief Peter Moreira of the Durham Regional
Police Service Becomes New OACP President
For Immediate Release: June 4, 2026
(Niagara, ON) – The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) is pleased to announce that Chief Peter Moreira of the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) has been officially named as the association’s President for the 2026-2027 term. Chief Moreira was formally sworn into office during a ceremony at the OACP’s Annual General Meeting today. He succeeds Chief Mark Campbell of the Strathroy-Caradoc Police Service, who will continue to provide strategic guidance to the association by remaining on the Board of Directors in the role of Past-President.
In his inaugural address, Chief Moreira shared his vision for his tenure: “When I first joined the policing profession, I resolved to remain open to any opportunity that would allow me to serve the people of my community, my organization, and my fellow police professionals. Making a meaningful difference matters deeply to me, and I am profoundly honoured to serve as OACP President during what are undoubtedly challenging yet exciting times for public safety and the policing sector.”
Chief Moreira brings a wealth of executive experience to the presidency, having served as the Chief of Police for the Durham Regional Police Service since March 2023. In this role, he has provided vital leadership and strategic direction to ensure safety across the rapidly growing Durham Region.
His extensive career spans more than 30 years of dedicated law enforcement service. He began his policing journey with the Toronto Police Service in 1991, where he steadily rose through the ranks to hold senior leadership positions across frontline patrol, specialized investigative units, and executive operations. Notably, his diverse background includes commanding the high-profile Homicide Squad and the Integrated Gun & Gang Task Force. He also provided critical operational leadership during the federal response to the 2022 Emergencies Act and has been a driving force behind major organizational transformation initiatives.
As a progressive leader, Chief Moreira is a strong advocate for institutional transparency, collaboration, and deep-rooted community partnerships. He remains deeply committed to modernizing police services to meet the evolving complexities of modern urban and suburban communities. In recognition of his exceptional service and merit, he has been invested as a Member of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces. Chief Moreira also holds a Bachelor of Arts (Policing Honours) from Wilfrid Laurier University.
