For Immediate Release: June 4, 2026
(Niagara, ON) – The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) is pleased to award the OACP 2026 Award of Excellence in the Advancement of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity in Policing to Detective Constable Eglon Weir, York Regional Police, in recognition of his dedicated volunteerism, youth mentorship, and community-building initiatives within York Region’s Black community.
This award honours an individual or organization that demonstrates exceptional commitment to achieving/advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion within their police organization and/or communities.
Detective Constable Weir serves as a vital bridge between law enforcement and the public. He balances his roles as a dedicated police officer, husband, and father with a heavy schedule of community leadership.
Through Detective Constable Weir’s continuous pattern of selflessness, mentorship, and philanthropy, he has created life-changing opportunities for local youth, while actively fostering trust and breaking down barriers between police and the Black community.
Key highlights of Detective Constable Weir’s community contributions include:
- Faith and Leadership: Serving since 2020 as a Youth Leader, Deacon, Treasurer, Elder, and committee member at One Church Toronto, where he recently produced a powerful video message aimed at bridging the gap between law enforcement and marginalized groups.
- Cultural and Educational Funding: Organizing a major Black History Month Gala in February 2025 through the African, Caribbean, Canadian Internal Support Network (ACCISN). The event raised critical funds to send youth to summer camps run by the Markham African Caribbean Canadian Association and the North African Caribbean Canadian Association.
- Athletic Mentorship: Volunteering since 2021 as an assistant and head coach for the Northern Kings basketball team (youth aged 9–13), where he stresses strength, conditioning, and mindfulness.
- Grassroots Philanthropy: Leading fundraising drives to ensure children can afford to play competitive sports. His recent team 50/50 draw notably provided enough financial support to help a player's single mother secure first and last month's rent for a stable home.
This annual award is made possible by the generous support from
Accident Support Services International Ltd.
