Chief William "Jim" Harding (Ret.), Halton Regional Police Service - October 27, 2022

Retired Chief Harding, or Jim as he was affectionately known, began his policing career in Canada with the then City of Brampton Municipal Police Department (now Peel Regional Police Service) in January 1967. He rose to the rank of Inspector and worked out of 12 Division before joining Halton Regional Police Service as Deputy Chief of Operations in May 1979. He was later promoted to Chief and remained with the Halton Regional Police Service until his retirement in 1994.

He will be remembered as the one responsible for changing the agency name from Halton Regional Police Force to Halton Regional Police Service. He was a pioneer leader and visionary whose contributions not only shaped Halton Regional Police Service, but the policing profession in Halton and beyond.

“We are not a force against the public, rather an agency to serve the public,” and look after their wellbeing and safety. – Chief William “Jim” Harding (Ret.)

Chief Harding was an OACP Member since June 1979 and a Past President from 1988 to 1889.
