(Toronto, ON) – The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) and the Cambridge Centre for Evidence-Based Policing (CCEBP) are excited to announce a new partnership that will support police personnel in Ontario and Canada in accessing evidence-based policing learning opportunities.

The Cambridge Centre for Evidence-Based Policing is a research and training consultancy that is applying evidence to improve policing practices worldwide. The CCEBP Director, Professor Lawrence W. Sherman, is the founder of Evidence-Based Policing (EBP). A world-renowned police innovator and educator, Professor Sherman has led more than 30 police experiments with more than 39,000 Google Scholar citations.

“We are excited to work with police leaders in Ontario to support police personnel for deploying evidence-based policing,” said Professor Sherman. “We believe that working with police leaders and personnel around the world helps us develop best practices and share EBP experiences that benefit both police and the communities they serve. The CCEBP looks forward to developing joint learning opportunities to support police personnel for excellence in policing.”

Evidence-Based Policing is a way of looking at police decision-making that moves beyond traditional police assumptions about what works and what doesn’t. Just as Ontario’s Community Safety and Well-Being Planning Framework guides police in strategically planning how to better invest resources to maximize returns when it comes to public safety, EBP provides a toolkit to support police professionals in designing the most effective crime prevention, disruption, and reduction services to fight crime, violence, and victimization.

“As we navigate today’s complex and challenging socio-political climate, we need police personnel at every rank and position to understand how EBP can expand their thinking and collective mindset to inspirationally and organizationally move law enforcement organizations from outputs- to outcomes-driven work,” said OACP Executive Director Jeff McGuire. “The Cambridge Centre for Evidence-Based Policing will assist us in supporting police professionals to better serve the diverse needs of all our communities.”

The OACP and CCEBP will be announcing specific joint initiatives that will provide police personnel in Ontario and Canada with EBP learning opportunities in the near future.
