After multiple meetings with Public Safety Canada and a full Board meeting with PSC. The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) has outlined its position on the Government of Canada’s proposed Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program (ASCFP). In the statement, the OACP noted that it continues to have serious concerns about the program’s design and implementation.
While our association appreciates the recent engagement with Public Safety Canada and recognizes the government’s stated goal of removing firearms that pose a public safety risk, our members remain clear: this program is not a policing or public safety priority in Ontario.
Key concerns include:
- Proof of Concept
- Clarity & Communication
- Resources & Capacity
- Public Safety Priorities
